Cold Weather Riding Gear & Tips

Riding in Maine can be cold in the autumn and spring. Having the right gear allows you comfortably extend your riding season by 2 or 3 months. This page explains how to dress appropriately for different temperature ranges.

For the 2015 Dempsey Challenge, the forecast is for temperatures in 25 to 30 degree range on Sunday morning at the start. That means you need to bundle up or your hands and feet will be frozen withing 20-30 minutes of starting. We highly recommend the following gear:

  • Thermal Jacket or Wind Vest
  • Arm & Knee Warmers
  • Headband/Skull cap
  • Booties
  • Good gloves
  • Foot warmer inserts (the best $2 you will ever spend)

The most important things to keep warm are your extremities. Your ears/head, hands and feet are crucial to keep warm. We find it best to layer up so that as temperatures change you can adapt by removing some layers so you don't overheat. The layering starts light and simple and builds up as the temperatures drop.

Here is a full breakdown by temperature range of the gear we think appropriate and that works for us. While we will ride when it's below 15 degrees, that requires extra special prep - come talk to us about it.

  • 50-60 degrees
    • wind vest + arm warmers

  • 40-50 degrees
    • wind vest + arm warmers
    • regular gloves or thin wool gloves
    • knee warmers
    • regular socks

  • 30-40 degrees
    • wind vest + arm warmers
    • headband / skull cap
    • lobster mitts or full finger gloves + thin wool gloves
    • knee warmers
    • wool socks
    • neoprene booties

  • 20-30 degrees
    • thermal jacket or double-wind vest & arm warmers
    • headband / skull cap
    • liner glove + lobster mitts
    • long tights / knee warmers
    • wool socks
    • pre-heated shoes
    • optional foot warmer pack in shoes
    • two layers of booties (regular + neoprene)

  • 15-20 degrees
    • thermal jacket (possibly with arm warmers underneath)
    • headband / skull cap OR a balaclava
    • liner glove + lobster mitts or ski gloves
    • long tights / knee warmers
    • wool socks
    • pre-heated shoes
    • foot warmer pack in shoes
    • two layers of booties (regular + neoprene)
